Better sappy Levs than anyone else, but as I said, this is a "weak" song on a really strong album. I don't skip it like I skip "Burn". I love noise and fiddles, with a healthy heaping of distortion, in my music, thank you very much. When I'm retired and got one foot in the grave I'll buy me a copy of "Levellers Love Songs" and crank it up in the old folks home. Amusing post, but I don't get the word 'weak'? I mean, i'd consider Eyes Wide a weak song, in fact, i'd consider it one of the worst songs the Levellers have ever recorded, in fact, i'd say its utter crap, but of course, thats just my opinion [/quote] Sounds familiar somehow As for "Weak Leveller songs, ie utter crap" please see Green Blade Rising, Hello Pig and Truth and Lies. There's a whole bucketful of crap songs on those albums. In my opinion, of course Eyes Wide rocks.

I think Truth And Lies is the worst Levellers album, definately, but GBR had some great songs on it and Hello Pig, well, whilst I can honestly say that after the first listen in 2000, I would 100 percent agree with you, but apart from Elvis, I think everything else works. The problem is of course with Hello Pig, I think they challenged their then fan base a bit too much to listen to something not 'typical' Levellers.

The problem is of course with Hello Pig, I think they challenged their then fan base a bit too much to listen to something not 'typical' Levellers. I have a huge music library ranging from classical to classic rock and punk to experimental, noise, hardcore, post-punk, post-rock, gothic (classic 80s, of course), metal, death metal, black metal, avant gard, new wave, blues, alternative rock, noise, country and folk. To name a few. If I want to listen to the Levellers it's because I want to listen to the Levellers and not something else that I have heard done 1000 times before by other bands better. Pig stinks imo, and GBR has 2 great songs and 9 duds. TAL is about 50% good and 50% poor with terrible production on top. LFTU is the first "real" Levellers album since Zeitgeist. IMO, of course

I'd be buggerred if Cholera Well and Burn America Burn are considered better songs than Duty and Acciental Anarchist.

LFTU is the first "real" Levellers album since Zeitgeist. IMO, of course In other words you are stuck in the past ;-) Nope, I'm listening to LFTU almost every day. Came out when? And if a band changes and tries to appeal to a different, broader and more poppy audience, I think I have every right to not like them anymore. For me, LFTU was a real surprise. I thought they'd never make another LP that would interest me ever again. As I've said before somewhere else here, my tastes usually run to a much darker, heavier or earthier type of music than GBR or T&L. My favorites include early Cure and Modern English, Virgin Prunes, tons of US hardcore, Slayer, Sol Invictus, Death in June, Angels of Light, Angry Red Planet, early Butthole Surfers, Beethoven, Pixies, Big Black, Shellac, Eno, Todd, 23 Skidoo, Hula, underground Detroit music from the 80s, Grinning Plowman, Killing Joke, early Skinny Puppy & Sonic Youth, Live Skull, The Names, Joy Division, New Model Army, Neurosis, Rapeman, Repulsion, very early or late Swans, etc etc etc. LFTU is a great album, no doubt.

I think its too early to start disecting this album in this way. After a few posts bagging Accidental Anarchist, I found myself bellowing the chorus out before & thinking 'this is ace'. Its all good. Theres always going to be something missing from a Levs album these days. If we compare them to the first four albums, one album will never combine all the good points about them which made me really get into them in the first place. I never thought the Levs would rock like this again & by christ they still do it well! I liked GBR & still do, give or take the odd song & love Hello Pig, but I thought that if anything they would get a bit more MOR than anything else, which i was kinda dreading! You can't beat growing old disgracefully Prine, fella, you should design festivals, with a line up like that. Stick in the Dropkick Murphys & I'm there!

A blah-blaher, quite possibly, but definitely not sensitive @govag: The Murphys can certainly come if they bring Flogging Molly. back @wayneUK: I am a child of the 70s-80s... I can't lie about it. But I really do search hard for new music. That's just another reason I like LFTU so much.

You and me both mate ;-) I just did a random sample in iTunes, and more than 80% of my CDs come from the early 80s... Thank god for the Daft Monkeys, Levellers, Flogging Molly and SubHumAns. At least I've got a couple albums from this decade...

I defy anyone to vote out 'Before the end' if that song doesn't win by a landslide then yer all listenin to a different album to me
I'd say we're listening to it with different ears . Before the End is not a Levellers song, nor very interesting or catchy. My wife likes it a lot, and I figure they put it on for their female fans. No offense intended , but Levellers and sappy love songs? Sorry. Not my cup of tea at all. Cholera Well and Fight or Flight are my favos right now. A Life Less Ordinary is also a standout. If I wasn't offline for a week I so would have voted out Before The End. Doesn't fit in with the rest of the album imho. Fight or Flight is my fave at the moment!
