McDermotts never made money, to speak of, except for Dirty Davey royalties ! You're welcome to anything...In fact, have one of the new lyrics...

          STOWAWAY
February evening,
your last day,
the heavy bonds that held you here
have all been cast away
No line into your vein now
no glass between your lips
as you lie licking grains of salt
pressed upon your fingertips

Stowaway, drift gently, but drift deep
All your walking's over now
This is where you sleep
Stowaway, drift gently, but drift far
Let this tide take all you were
away from all you are

You must use this craft now
to bear you through the cold
hidden with your treasures
in its creaking hold:
these objects you vivify,
lines you read or sing
talismans to testify
to travellers here you cannot bring

Stowaway...

And take this sheath of images
garnered year by year
that mark a quick life's changes
from safe hours to hours of fear
There is no trace of womanhood
no print of all you might have made
but the passage of a childhood
cut off now and stowed away

Stowaway...

So take this bright craft
into the dark tide
receding as the moments pass,
keepsakes by your side
And when you have landed
step into the risen sun
where the trail of all that's ended
meets the path of all that is begun

Cracking lyrics!  Can't wait to hear the song with the tune Grin
Thanks Tinkerbell - I will use the privilege wisely.  McDermotts are far more deserving of financial success than some bands/record companies that print dire warnings about piracy, I think.
So far I've converted a Spanish (Asturian) girl at work, who knows hardly any folk bands over here but loves Celtic music, in time I expect she'll convert her partner and her wide circle of Spanish friends over here.  So if you get a huge group of Asturians at a gig... Grin

i think it depends on the reason... copying an entire album cos someone cannot be arsed to buy it is piracy.. but then for instance a situation like we made a compliation cd of bleeders songs for somneone who then became a fan of the band is entirely different... think its all down to the intention.. if the intention is to deliberaltey defraud the band of money then thats wrong.. if the aim is to make the band more money then itsw not..

The band were asked their opinions on piracy in the last issue of OTF magazine.  From what I can remember only Simon said he was totally against.

I think most peoples answers as far as boardies go above are spot on.  I don't really think it's acceptable to pirate anyone's work with the intention of just having copied albums.  It can be justified, as Dim says, when you do copies of stuff/make compilations, etc., to get somebody interested in an artist's work so that they decide to become a fan and go out and buy stuff themselves.  In this way I think copying is very acceptable - I actually think it brings sales for artists that they migt not otherwise get.

And groups of peeps who buy an album between them and copy it, that's just shit.  What's the point?  Part of being a music fan is surely to own the sleeve notes, etc. of the great albums you own?

Thanks to both of you, glad you like it.  About my niece's little girl, lived across town, died of leukaemia, at eleven, earlier this year.  (There's a happier piece, closer to home, gone up on http://www.poetrymagazines.org.uk/magazine/record.asp?id=15453 ) Tell you what though, if you want, I'll post all the new lyrics as I type them out - have to anyway - and you can put your own tunes to them, then, when they're recorded, you can see how close you were! There's a bit of a delay on - a few logistical problems - but they will get done in some shape or form. We can make a virtual album no one can hear in the meantime. Kind of inverted piracy...
Sorry to interrupt the thread......Yup, spot on...

Liked the poem about the den - I went through a phase of building dens when I was little - my friend Vanessa had all mod cons in hers, I wonder where she is now, last heard of living in Hastings.
As for thinking of a tune to Stowaway - I guess it would be quite slow and sad, similar to Postcard - that's as far as my musical imagination will go.  Sad to hear about the little girl, was it the same girl who's funeral you played at?  I will be thinking of her family when I hear the finished song Cry

Just found the thread and realised it wasn't, sorry!
Stowaway also reminds me of The Ferryman by Ralph McTell. Another great folk artist.

No problem. In fact hardly anyone went to the funeral - her mum wanted it that way...And thanks again...

And now for something completely different:

                Trickster

A trickster caught me on the street
sleeves rolled up and hair clipped neat
painted smile on his cheeks
He said, we should have spoken
for my work here is near complete
I've stolen the ground from under your feet
but I won't have taken what I seek
until I see you broken

Tinker tailor soldier sailor
rich man poor man thief
Your heart bleeds but your veins are hollow
Where I lead I know you'll follow
and, sure as hell, the lies you swallow
beggar belief

He said, You always fought the good fight
but now you don't know your left from your right
your white is black and your black is white
Admit you've been forsaken
All you believed once now you doubt
The urge conceived is all scraped out
I said, You don't know what you're talking about
He said, You are mistaken

Tinker, tailor...

War goes on and you stand still
You cast your vote, they shoot to kill
Now you raise money where you raised hell
It's sad your faith's so shaken
But I denied I played his game
He said, You shouldn't feel ashamed
You know it's all done in your name
This is the path you've taken

Tinker, tailor...

It's over now, he said, I'll go
I caught his arm and I cried, You know
whatever power you take now
the wheel will always turn
We'll rise again when the cold wind blows
across your grave - He said, Who knows?
Plus ca change, plus c'est la meme chose
Call me, I will return

Tinker, tailor...

Robert Holdstock uses 'Trickster' as an archetype, a 'mythago', in his books - a 'dark side', the part of you that is dishonest with yourself and seeks to destroy you - or am I too darn deep?  Is it merely about Tony Blair? Grin
I sometimes wonder whether it's better to have an explanation for a song (or any piece of art) or read into it what you want - sometimes the artist can go and spoil it all for you!

No, you're spot on. The Trickster archetype appears all over the place, doesn't it? For one of my many not altogether successful treatments I was sent for psycho-analysis some years ago. I got into the work Jung did on the Trickster - mainly because I kept seeing and talking to one such figure under hypnosis, and then all over the place - which had its disadvantages - well, still does!  But Tony Blair is a fitting disguise, don't you think? As you say, dishonest and, if the truth were told,  seeking the destruction of what he seems to want to protect. In the sense that he is the embodiment of a collective will, he is "our" dark side, which is what the figure in the song so cynically insists. And, of course, ultimately, to The Trickster, it's all a game.

Hmm, I've had a bit of trouble with Trickster myself...maybe I'll tell you over a few pints one day.   And I read Jung because he seemed to be the only chap that studied these things...big mistake.  I definitely learnt a lot more about myself during that time, but only in a negative way from Trickster.  I should have listened to more sensible voices Embarrassed
